Expression and function of NOD-like receptors by human term gestation-associated tissues

•Transcripts for NOD1, NOD2, NLRP3, NLRC4, NLRX1, NLRP1 and NAIP are expressed by term human gestation-associated tissues.•Term human placenta, choriodecidua and amnion express NOD1, NOD2 and NLRP3 protein.•NOD1, NOD2 and NLRP3 are functional in term human placenta, choriodecidua and amnion.•NLR induced interlukin-1β production by term human gestation-associated tissues is caspase-1-dependent.
