A survey on player tracking in soccer videos.

•The main goal of this paper is to review different preprocessing steps for soccer player tracking, categorize different tracking frameworks and compare them in terms of the available evaluation criteria.•It may help researchers to get familiar with the renowned and state-of-the-art methods in the domain.•It highlights future research directions to compensate for the weaknesses and low performances of the available algorithms.•This paper gives insight into enhancing existing trackers or proposing new ones, and each reviewed tracker can be developed in different applications.
