•Two sonification designs are proposed to reduce noise perception in data exploration.•Compared sonification designs were based on tempo and time-averaged pitch.•Design performances were compared using a topology exploration task.•Both designs reduced noise perception, tempo offered the best performance.•Tempo allowed users to focus on specific data values by varying exploration speed.
