•We provide a literature review on Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) policies.•Our focus is on multi-component systems subject to different dependencies.•A new, more complete classification of types of dependencies is proposed.•We investigate the implications of dependencies on the optimal CBM policy structure.•We provide real-life examples for each type of dependence, and stress research gaps.
