•A novel method was proposed for separation of PVC by froth flotation.•Calcium hypochlorite treatment improves selectively surface wettablity.•Mechanism of surface treatment was examined by SEM, FTIR and XPS.•Binary plastics with different particle sizes were separated effectively.•Separation of PVC from mixed plastic wastes was obtained.
