•AMPT decreased the responsiveness of the zebrafish to an acute stress.•We suggest a mechanism of catecholamine-glucocorticoid interplay in neuroendocrine responses of fish.•This mechanism can be an interesting avenue for physiological research.•This mechanism might be an important endpoint that can be disrupted by environmental contamination.
