•The initial effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on IGABA are mediated by α1β2γ2S or α6β2γ2S receptors expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes.•Bath application of MeHg initially potentiated IGABA to its more defined later effects.•This effect is reversible and appears to be a direct interaction of MeHg with GABAA receptors.
