•Enhanced GABAergic activities are associated with the state of photorefractoriness.•Photorefractoriness stimulated by steroid withdrawal can induce GABAARs upregulation.•GABAAR α3/4,δ,π,γ2-subunits are upregulated in the PMM of steroid withdrawal hens.•Ovarian steroid withdrawal also diminishes the reproductive neuroendocrine responses.•Steroid withdrawal contributes to the state of photorefractoriness in turkeys.
