•Sequence ERAP1 and ERAP2 in 10 dogs of 9 different breeds.•Identify SNPs in exons 3–20 of ERAP1 and 1–20 ERAP2.•Develop Sequenom assay for SNP detection and use it to identify specific haplotypes.•Compare SNP haplotype frequencies in random- and pure-breeds of dogs, wolf, coyote, jackal and red fox.
