•Postsurgical seromas are a newly described predilection site of M. bovis in beef cattle.•Isolates obtained from joints and udders were genetically identical to M. bovis seroma isolates.•M. bovis isolates from seromas can spread among farms.•M. bovis infected seromas have a poor prognosis.
