Antibacterial activity of extracts and compounds isolated from the Andean medicinal plant Azorella cryptantha (Clos) Reiche, Apiaceae

•Azorella cryptantha a promising source of antimicrobial agents against enterobacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis.•Nine terpenes were isolated from A. cryptantha, which 3, 5, 6 and 9, are reported for the first time.•The A. cryptantha extracts and isolated compounds showed an interesting antibacterial activity to treat food-borne illnesses.•The strong antibacterial effect supports the ethnopharmacological use and commercialization of this plant.
