•Microencapsulation of Schinus molle EO was useful for controlling the release of active components.•Microcapsules improved the insecticidal potential of Schinus molle EO.•The spray-drying technique applied was an efficient, inexpensive, and simple process.•The analytical method described herein could be useful for quality control of plant material and microcapsules.
