•IL-2 and IL-6 levels are increased in first episode drug-naïve psychotics.•Inflammatory response mediated by IL-2 and IL-6 may play a role in schizophrenia.•No differences found in IL-10, IL-17, TGF-β2 levels between patients and controls.
