•L. plantarum administered after virus challenge promotes full survival from an otherwise lethal PVM infection.•PVM-infected IL-10−/− mice exhibit survival and suppressed inflammatory responses in response to L. plantarum.•TLR2−/− and NOD2−/− mice are likewise protected against lethal PVM infection by L. plantarum, a potential for crosstalk.
