•Adding plant-derived dissolved organic matter increased soil CO2 and N2O emissions.•Adding plant-derived dissolved organic matter decreased soil C sequestration.•Soil CO2 emission was positively correlated with microbial biomass and root biomass.•The release of N2O was dependent on the supply of dissolved organic carbon.
