•Soil microbial community (SMC) respired most after addition of carboxylic acids.•More CO2 was produced by SMC under beech and holm oak than under oak and pine.•CLPP were related to tree species and mineral soil properties.•Microbial activity in subsoil was related to subsoil Ca concentration and pH.
