Solar irradiance forecasting using spatio-temporal empirical kriging and vector autoregressive models with parameter shrinkage

•We propose two statistics to quantify the threshold distance within a solar irradiance random field.•The determined threshold distance is used as a parameter shrinkage tool for solar irradiance forecasting.•The shrunken models improve the predictive performances of the spatio-temporal models.
