Abstract
P166 Background. HTLV-II may predispose to pneumonia and bronchitis and there have been several case reports of HTLV-I related lymphocytic pneumonia. However pulmonary function has not been well studied in HTLV-I or -II seropositives. Methods. We performed forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume/1sec (FEV1), as well as carbon monoxide diffusing capacity corrected for Hgb (DLCOcorr) and for alveolar ventilation (DLCO/VA) on 46 HTLV-I, 84 HTLV-II and 127 seronegative control subjects from the REDS cohort. Results. Subjects were comparable in age and sex, but differed in race and cigarette smoking, with HTLV-II subjects more likely to be current smokers. Mean values, and the difference vs. the control mean (95% conf interval) adjusted for height squared (H2), sex, race body weight and cigarette smoking, are presented below: (Table)TableConclusion. Although FVC and DLCOcorr were slightly worse in HTLV-I subjects, HTLV-I and HTLV-II PFT's were no different from controls after adjustment for relevant confounding variables.
