Abstract
Rationale: Prenatal environmental adversities affect brain development and have been associated with increased risk of schizophrenia, an illness with 50% comorbidity with drug dependence. Maternal immune activation by polyinosinic–cytidylic acid (POLY:IC) exposure can promote neurochemical and behavioral abnormalities consistent with schizophrenia in rodents. Considering the vulnerability to addiction in patients with schizophrenia, we evaluated the interaction between prenatal POLY:IC administrations with an animal model of drug dependence (behavioral sensitization to amphetamine (AMP)).
