•Serum BDNF was reduced in patients with treatment-resistant depression.•Both ketamine and ECT treatment reduced depressive symptoms.•Ketamine only increased BDNF at 1 week post-infusion 1 in responders at this time.•ECT did not normalise BDNF levels.
