Bond strength and microstructural developments were investigated during fabrication of simulated plate fuel elements. The study involved roll bonding of aluminum–aluminum (case A) and aluminum–aluminum+yttria (Y2O3) dispersion (case B). Case B approximated aluminum–uranium silicide (U3Si2) ‘fuel-meat’ in an actual plate fuel.
