Abstract
Focussing on clothing viewed as a body practice, this paper attempts to provide an ethnographic overview through the examination of the creation of the national dress of Equatorial Guinea. With a discussion of the importance of the personal motivation of its promoters, the reasons for its alleged failure and the recent attempts in current fashion shows in Malabo to (re)produce identity discourses, this paper also seeks to demonstrate the capacity of dress as a tool for social control, resistance and identity (re)creation.
