Effects of Benzalkonium Chloride, Proxel LV, P3 Hypochloran, Triton X-100 and DOWFAX 63N10 on anaerobic digestion processes

•Four out of five xenobiotics tested had strong inhibitory effect on the AD process.•Benzalkonium Chloride was the most toxic xenobiotic tested in all AD reactors.•P3 Hypochloran had no effect on AD process even under high concentrations.•Xenobiotic mixture had neither additive nor synergistic toxic effect on AD process.•IC50 Triton-X concentration had no effect on AD process in continuous mode.
