•Zeolite A coatings with rough surfaces are prepared by substrate heating.•Adsorption rates of the coatings having various thicknesses are determined.•Optimum zeolite A coating thickness, maximizing the power, exists.•Optimum thickness, around 130–140μm, varies somewhat with normalized loading.
