•We applied the DAOSD to probe coordination between Nd3+ ions and ethyl acetate.•Cross peaks reveal subtle spectral change related to coordination between Nd3+ and the ester group.•A peak at 177.8ppm in 13C NMR supports coordination between Nd3+ and ethyl acetate.
