Microstructural interpretation of the ablative properties of phenolic–quartz hybrid fabric reinforced phenolic resin composites

•Phenolic–quartz hybrid fabric reinforced composites were manufactured.•During ablation, the phenolic fiber reacted with the phenolic resin.•During ablation, the hybrid composites gave a vis-à-vis char structure.•The resistance of the hybrid composites to erosion was improved.
