•The prepared mesoporous carbon-supported cobalt (Co-MC) composite had enhanced catalytic activity.•Prepared Co-MC exhibited high selectivity for the oxidation of toluene and degradation of dyes.•The catalyst demonstrated convenient magnetic separability and excellent reusability.
