•Bends induce formation of water bridges across toluene plugs-this favours slug flow.•The same effect deters annular flow.•Due to greater gravity effect, 90° bend has a greater influence on flow distribution.•Amplification factor increases with decrease in mixture Reynolds number.•Bend loss co-efficient is always higher in 45° than 90° bend.
