•Fine grained ZrB2–SiC–hBN composite were reactively densified from coarse precursors.•Employ the SHS ignited in ZrN–Si–B4C systems to improve microstructure homogeneity.•Strength reliability and strain tolerance of obtained ceramics were much improved.
