CO 2 -driven changes in energy and fermentative metabolism in harvested strawberries

•Accumulation of PDC transcripts but not acetaldehyde in strawberries stored at 0°C.•No correlation between ethanol and ADH expression in fruit stored at 0°C in air.•Strawberries stored at 0°C in air presented the highest ATP/ADP ratio.•Marked decrease in ATP/ADP ratio in CO2-treated strawberries in the presence of O2.
