Ten-Year Outcomes in Men Under 60 Treated With Iodine-125 Permanent Brachytherapy as Monotherapy

Abstract
This study compares long term outcomes in patients above and below the age of 60 years treated with low dose rate permanent prostate seed brachytherapy at single center in the United Kingdom. Between March 1995 to September 2007, 2157 consecutive patients underwent TRUS guided transperineal Iodine-125 Brachytherapy delivering 145 Gy (TG 43). Neoadjuvant hormonal therapy was not standard and only used routinely for gland cyto-reduction. No patients received supplemental external beam radiation therapy. Five hundred seventy-five (27%) patients treated were less than 60 and 1582 (73%) patients were over the age of 60 years. Outcome data are reported in terms of overall survival and PSA relapse free survival (Nadir + 2). Median follow-up was 6.5 years. Overall survival at 10 years in patients less than and over 60 years is 86% and 75%, respectively (P < 0.005). PSA relapse-free survival at 10 years in less than and over 60 years is 77% and 70%, respectively (P < 0.05).
