Quantitative assessment of probability of failing safely for the safety instrumented system using reliability block diagram method

•Models of PFS for SIS were established by using the reliability block diagram.•The more accurate calculation of PFS for SIS can be acquired by using SL.•Degraded operation of complex SIS does not affect the availability of SIS.•The safe undetected failure is the largest contribution to the PFS of SIS.
