Combining catalytic tests with characterizations using FTIR spectroscopy and water/toluene competitive adsorption, we describe the role of hydrophobicity, acid strength and stability in the remarkable activity of sulfonic acid-functionalized periodic mesoporous benzene-silica material in the acid-catalyzed aqueous organic reactions.
