•Ru nanoparticles supported on amine functionalized nanoporous polymer (AFPS).•Selective hydrogenation of D-glucose was investigated using Ru/AFPS based catalysts.•Selective formation of D-sorbitol was influenced by loading of Ru.•Ru/AFPS showed better catalytic performance than non-functionalized polymer catalyst.
