Mechanism of titania nanograss formation during anodization

•Well aligned titania nanotube with nanograss can be prepared through anodization.•TiO2 nanograss growth rate and morphology can be controlled by anodization parameters.•At higher water content, ring splitting of tubes is observed instead of vertical splitting.•Mechanism for vertical and ‘ring’ splitting of titania nanotube is proposed.
