•We offer an understanding of the location-specific factors for post-entry development of MNC's subsidiaries at a sub-national level.•We use primary data from an on-line survey of 91 foreign-owned subsidiaries in Poland.•We employ a discrete-choice model.•We show that different location-specific factors contribute to the post-entry subsidiary development at the sub-national level in Poland.
