Protein and bacterial interactions with nanostructured polymer coatings

•The surface chemistry and topography of the polymer coatings (PS/ABS) was modified.•Ability of the coatings to adsorb avidin and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated.•Avidin adsorbed less to ABS phase but had a higher specific binding of biotin-BSA.•The increased hydrophobicity and roughness enhanced the adhesion of S. aureus.•An avidin coated two-component latex surface showed anti-microbial behavior.
