Statistical regularities reduce perceived numerosity

•We examined how regularities of object co-occurrences shape numerosity perception.•Observers estimated the number of dots in an array in each trial.•Estimates were lower in arrays containing pairs of dots than in random arrays.•Reduced estimates can be explained by a grouping mechanism.•Underestimation cannot be explained by attention to individual dots in the array.
