•The histological changes of organs in G. changii supplementation model were determined.•G. changii decreased hepatic cholesterol and improved fatty liver condition.•G. changii did not cause toxicity effect to the rat liver, kidney and heart.•The safety of G. changii suggests its potential as a functional food ingredient.
