An equivalent smeared layer method for simulating the non-uniform corrosion-induced damage of concrete

•A new model is developed to study the evolution of corrosion cracks in concrete.•An equivalent smeared layer is introduced to replace the rust layer.•The uniform, 2D non-uniform and 3D pitting corrosion all can be simulated.•The reverse compression of rust is also considered.
