Abstract

•A two-step synthesis of 2- and 4-trifluoromethylated dinitrotoluenes is developed.•The method does not demand to carry out the fluorination reaction in HF media.•The synthesized toluenes were converted into 4- and 6-trifluoromethylated nitroindoles.
