•AGNES determines free concentrations of Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ despite adsorption.•The equilibrium between M and Mo (reduced metal) is not affected by other equilibria.•Special strategy was needed for a strong surfactant stabilizing ZnO nanoparticles.
