摘要
PowerPoint presentations have become a ubiquitous element of many classrooms. However, in resource-poor environ- ments, a computer represents a significant investment that is difficult to acquire and sustain. In this work, we propose and evaluate a low-tech alternative, using DVD players and TVs, for interactive classroom presentations. Using an off- the-shelf tool, we convert PowerPoint teaching aids to DVD format, preserving animations, hyperlinks, and embedded multimedia. We evaluate the usability of TV-DVD versus computer in a 3-week controlled trial in an urban school in India. Based on feedback from 2 teachers, 62 students, and 8 parents, as well as over 30 hours of direct observation, we conclude that TV-DVD is equally if not more effective than a computer for slideshow presentations in resource-poor en- vironments. In addition to its reduced cost, TV-DVD offers gains in reliability, familiarity, standardization, and s uitabil- ity for viewing at a distance.
