Instrumented shoes for activity classification in the elderly

•We designed novel instrumented shoes for activity monitoring in older persons.•We automatically classified different types of walking (level, uphill, downhill).•We automatically classified taking elevators (up/down), sitting and standing posture.•We validated the classification rules and obtained an overall accuracy of 97%.•We showed that the algorithm is robust to small changes of tuning parameters.
