Abstract
•A large-mesh belly window (LMBW) trawl was tested in the Maine silver hake fishery.•The LMBW trawl maintained commercial catch rates and reduced bycatch.•No difference was found for the catch of large silver hake by the LMBW trawl.•Small silver hake were caught less frequently by the LMBW trawl.•Quantitative video analysis of silver hake behavior at the window was examined.
