•SBA-15 and Aerosil 380 silicas are used as supports for Ni, Co and Fe nanoparticles.•Ethanol decomposition to H2 and C-nanotubes depends on the type of metal and support.•Both Ni-based catalysts proved the most active with high yield for H2 and C-nanotubes.•Well-defined MWCNTs are produced over Ni/silica independently on the support porosity.
