•PEC/N can be applied to low melting point metal.•The spectroscopic characterization of plasma discharge is investigated.•Electron concentration and electron temperature are evaluated for PEC/N.•Phase composition of the carbonitrided layer is determined.•PEC/N improves the corrosion resistance of aluminum greatly.
