Abstract
•We proposed a novel hierarchical rule-based framework to extract urban land use (LU) information.•A new approach of post classification correction is proposed using the spatial arrangement of analysis.•The developed LU Extraction Expert System (LUEES) extracts Res and non-Res buildings with a very high accuracy.•The LUEES will be incorporated into any integrated land use and transportation model to assist a micro-simulation process.
