•A supersonic jet oscillator with two face to face cavities was tested.•The periodical flipping of the jet appears over a large Mach number range.•The flipping frequency varies in a narrow range with nozzle pressure ratio.•The oscillating jet achieves significant mixing enhancement than a free jet.
