•F14512 shows a strong cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic activity in ovarian cancer cells.•F14512 efficacy is correlated with F17073 incorporation in ovarian cancer cells.•F14512 inhibited tumor growth in a cisplatin-resistant A2780R xenograft model.•F17073 fluorescent probe is a tool to evaluate the PTS activity in patients.•83% of patients present a high PTS activity in ovarian cancer cells.
